From the tiny droplet that expels with a cough to the grand oceans on the planet to the hidden sources underground, there is wonder in water. Water is all around us as it falls from the sky, hovers in the air, and springs from depths below.
It even causes emotions within us. Rhythmic water lapping at a beach ushers in a feeling of calm, while turbulent waves rocking a boat can bring a sense of panic. A glass-like pond stirs admiration and a rippling brook conveys lightheartedness.
Our God created the marvels of water. And water – as the setting or the effect – plays a role in many biblical accounts and analogies. Through those, God’s character and amazing works are displayed.
Have you ever wished you could control the amount and timing of rain? God can! When Jesus was on a boat with his disciples, he used a sudden storm to teach the importance of having faith in him – the one who “commands even the wind and the water, and they obey him” (Luke 8:25b NIV).
Our God is powerful and works wonders. God proclaims, “I am the LORD, the God of all mankind. Is anything too hard for me?” (Jeremiah 32:27 NIV, letter P for powerful in Follow and Lead).
Have you ever wished you could displace water when it obstructed your route? God can! When God was leading the Israelites from Egypt but the sea was in the way, God split the water so his people could cross but his enemies drown. “And when the Israelites saw the mighty hand of the LORD displayed against the Egyptians, the people feared the LORD and put their trust in him…” (Exodus 14:31 NIV).
Our God is sovereign and his plans are not hindered. About God, Job declares, “I know that you can do all things, and that no purpose of yours can be thwarted” (Job 42:2 ESV, letter S for sovereign in Follow and Lead).
Have you ever wished you could quench your thirst for water indefinitely? God can! When Jesus orchestrated a life-changing conversation at a well with a Samaritan woman, he offered her living water. “Whoever drinks the water I give will never thirst” (John 4:14a NIV).
Our God is provider and he satisfies us as we thirst for him. About himself, Jesus says, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’ Now this he said about the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were to receive” (John 7:37b-39a EVS).
Our God is in control, guides our steps, and meets our needs. May our faith in him, trust in him, and focus on him deepen each day. In this, may his glory be displayed in our lives.
Focus on God’s character, his wonders, and his love for you as you work through Follow and Lead.
