Remember from your school days copying lines from books in order to store that content in your mind? Now, you might copy Bible verses to help you remember the words of God.
Around the world, there are Christians who have no option except to write verses from memory, because their Bible was taken from them. This is especially true for believers where it is illegal to own a Bible or where there is a shortage of Bibles or when persecution results in not having a Bible. When a believer is stripped of his or her Bible, memorized verses written on paper scraps or etched in prison walls usher in spiritual strength, hope, and perseverance. Those persecuted believers are encouraged as they share with each other God’s words. In doing so, the hope of Christ is also displayed to those who are watching and listening. For many believers who are sent to prison, they see this chapter in their life as an opportunity to share Jesus with the most discouraged. Our brothers and sisters in Christ know that God is in control, that “the steps of a man are established by the LORD, when he delights in his way” (Psalm 37:23 ESV). When they are being afflicted and persecuted, they cling to God’s promises, confident that his power sustains them through Jesus (2 Corinthians 4:6-10).
Let’s pray for this persecuted family of God:
Heavenly Father, we know that you love and take care of each of your children. Please provide for our persecuted brothers and sisters according to your riches in glory in Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:19). Your presence and your truth sustain them, encourage them, and give them hope to persevere. May your Holy Spirit bring to the forefront of their minds the Bible verses they have memorized and hidden in their heart. Your Word is powerful, not only for those who trust in you, but also for those who overhear your truths and become transformed by them. May you be glorified wherever you place your children.
