YOLO – You Only Live Once
Does this thought motivate you to seize the moments at hand?
Does it catapult you out of your comfort zone?
The best of YOLO is acting on what is good and true!
We know that God is good and true, so let’s make bold choices that honor him (Psalm 25:8 ESV)!
Indeed, God gives us just one span of life on Earth. While we’re here, God lovingly and mercifully gives us the opportunity to know him through Jesus’ sacrifice and to grow in him through the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. By submitting to him we can live out what Jesus said are the two greatest commandments – to love God wholeheartedly and to love others (Mark 12:30-31). Being found faithful to Jesus until the end, we will be welcomed by God into eternity with him (Matthew 7:21). That will be really living – the way God designed it from the beginning! We will be perfectly with him in the new heaven and earth (Isaiah 65:17- 25).
The reality is that we don’t know when our present life here will be finished. We must ask ourselves if we are choosing to live our days to honor God or ourselves.
The apostle Paul famously stated, “For me, to live is Christ and to die is gain” (Philippians 1:21 ESV). He wanted to boldly live for the glory of God but also eagerly anticipated being in the physical presence of his Savior and Lord. The Old Testament heroes in the faith boldly obeyed God without rebuttal. God was pleased with their faith in action, and he counted it as righteousness (Hebrews 11).
YOLO reminds us that we have just this one life to live in order to prepare for meeting our Creator and Savior. In this life, we are able to learn about him, worship him, love him, and serve him. Doing so will also affect how we interact with those in our spheres of influence. Loving God wholeheartedly is to be the motivator of all we do. In light of the end times, Peter exhorts us to live holy and godly lives, live at peace with God, and grow in the grace and knowledge of Jesus (2 Peter 3:11,14,18).
For just a moment, let’s compare God, in part, to a composer who conducts an orchestra playing his piece. He directs all the instruments in coordination for his intended piece. He understands the placement of each part. Each is valuable to the song, adding depth of melody, harmony, and rhythm. This songwriter has created the sounds of beauty and emotion, and he affords the players opportunity to diligently practice. Would you choose to join?
Let’s live the way God intends for us. And, let’s give him the glory in this life which he beautifully orchestrates!
