Give it Some Time

Give it Some Time.m4a

In one day, each of us has 1,440 minutes to use.

When we take away the hours we sleep, the duration of work, the minutes we drive, the time spent for meals, and the moments we spend with others, the number of remaining minutes we each have varies.

The aspects of our day that are easiest to let go of are usually the ones that challenge us the most or the ones we take for granted. Oftentimes, the mindless time fillers are not what we release.

What are you letting slip out of each day without even realizing it?

Have you carved out intentional time for investing in your relationship with God?

There are plenty of devotionals or radio spots that want to encourage you in this. The allure is often a quick, squeeze-it-in moment to connect with your Maker. A one-minute devotional or a random Bible verse is popped into your day. Though this intention may be good, isn’t God worth more than a fleeting thought once in a day?

We need to give God some more of our time. Actually, he wants all of it!

Isaiah 26:3 describes one way that God shows us he values our connection with him: “You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you” (ESV). Isn’t this an extraordinary blessing to have each day while we struggle against our distractions?

How do we keep our mind stayed on God?

For a person desiring to do this, Psalm 1:2 gives the method:  “His delight is in the law of the LORD, and on his law he meditates day and night” (ESV, part of letter B in Keep on Track Volume 2). Notice how it takes more than a quick read-and-close-the-book moment or a quick listen-and-change-the-channel minute? We need to meditate on God’s truths all day, letting them seep into our thoughts and prayers so they will affect our words and deeds.

Moment by moment, God wants us to desire his presence and his lead.

Then, we submit to God – demonstrating our trust in him. The apostle Paul reminds us to “rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus” (1 Thessalonians 5:17-19 NIV). We rejoice in our salvation through Jesus who provides us continual access to our heavenly Father, who lovingly cares for us. This can motivate us in everyday moments.

Isn’t it amazing that throughout our day we can be in communion with God – in prayer and praise? Let’s make it a priority to also hear from him – by reading the Bible. The Holy Spirit will work in us as God’s Word teaches us, exposes our sins, corrects us, and trains us in godliness (2 Timothy 3:16).
