For Children's Sake

Can you imagine not being allowed teach your children about God and faith in Jesus?

Some might choose to not teach their children about the Christian faith. Others might choose to not afford them biblical training at church. How would you feel, though, if the government forbade you from giving Christian instruction to your own children?

This is the reality in Uzbekistan, located in central Asia and ranked 25th on the World Watch List for extreme hostility toward Christians. One year ago a law went into effect forbidding anyone, including parents, from giving children religious education at home or at an unregistered establishment. The said goal of the country’s president is to further protect the rights of children. In this Muslim-majority country, many Muslim parents are not in agreement with this law. Christian parents here are also concerned, as this law makes it even more difficult for them to disciple their children in the ways of the Jesus. Consequences of breaking this law can result in losing up to one month’s wage or receiving up to 15 days in jail. Discussing Christian faith within one’s family is punishable by arrest and imprisonment. Possessing Christian literature at home often leads to harassment, corrective labor, or imprisonment. Despite the risk, these parents understand the value of discipling their children in the Lord.

Let’s pray for the Christian families in Uzbekistan:

Heavenly Father, we acknowledge you as the one true God. In your love and omniscience, you know each need of your children in Uzbekistan. You see how their commitment to you can mark them for persecution. These faithful brothers and sisters want to share your truth, your love, and your hope with their children. Please bless them with your loving presence as they obey you in discipling their children. You are greater than the evil that tries to come against them. Be their rock, their fortress, and their deliverer (2 Samuel 22:2). Protect them and show them how to instruct their children discreetly. Give these parents and children boldness, perseverance, and love as they live for you in this region that desperately needs Jesus.
