Our Rock

“I just spent some time listening to your blog posts. Thank you… They are such a blessing and challenge.”

Do have that one special person you just know you can trust to keep you grounded and safe?

With whatever you are experiencing, you might say that this person is your rock. However, with changing responsibilities, values, and emotions, other people cannot always be depended upon. There is the possibility of ‘our person’ not being available, invested, or capable.

God, however, is always available for his children, intimately invested, and fully capable.

Beyond a shadow of doubt, we can confidently say that God is our Rock.

Moses sang about God being the Rock for his chosen people. After Moses had recorded the Book of the Law and it was placed beside the ark of the covenant, he foretold the Israelites of the rebellion they would have against God. He then recites a song to the Israelites about God’s holiness and sovereignty. Moses reminds them that God “is the Rock, his works are perfect, and all his ways are just. A faithful God who does no wrong, upright and just is he” (Deuteronomy 32:4 NIV).

God’s chosen people needed to remember that God can be trusted and he remains true.

David endured great challenges in his lifetime because of his dependence on God. There were the times he played the harp to calm King Saul when a harmful spirit tormented him and when he chose to fight Goliath for King Saul in the name of the LORD Almighty. Even when he was being pursued for death by King Saul, David was able to declare, “The LORD is my rock, my fortress, and my deliverer” (2 Samuel 22:2 NIV, letter D for Deliverer in Follow and Lead).

David remembered that the Almighty God is constant and present.

As God’s children, how can we apply these truths in our own life?

When we are in difficult situations, we can remember that God is our Rock. He gives us the Holy Spirit whose power is at work in us (1 John 4:13). He helps us to know God better, trust him, and do his will.

God is our fortress and our deliverer, who protects us from the evil one. To remind us of these truths, in 1529 Martin Luther penned the hymn “A Mighty Fortress is Our God.” Its potent lyrics are worth singing for reflection and praise.

Jesus is our firm foundation. In 1994, John Chisum wrote the worship song “Firm Foundation” to proclaim the truth and faithfulness of Jesus as our living hope. Worship Jesus as you sing this song and declare your hope in him.

Is God the Rock on which you stand each day?

Remind yourself of the God you worship and serve as you learn about him using Follow and Lead.
